Mentoring in the Sciences
Mentorship Relationship
In a mentoring relationship, the Mentee is encouraged to take responsibility for driving the relationship, arranging meetings, setting the goals, and developing ways the Mentor may assist them.
The key to the success of the Mentee/Mentor relationship is open and honest communication. Like any other relationship, Mentees and Mentors should spend time at the start of the relationship to get to know one another. Learn about each other’s background and career experience, establish an agreement about the type, duration and frequency of meetings, and clearly communicate needs and goals.
For example, communication may be informal (such as quick questions via email) or more formal (such as agreed upon monthly meetings or other in-person or virtual meetups).
Mentees should prepare agendas for each meeting and send them ahead of the planned meeting or provide other logistical support.
